I was on the road this morning, so I went through my IPOD and went to my Aretha Franklin's Greatest Hits CD because I was feeling like hearing the GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME sing me some love songs. And like most people I usually skip to my favorite 30 of the 50, lol. But today I decided to just let the thing play through. And the song Angel comes on and during the intro of the song Aretha talks about how her sister Carolyn wrote the song. And it just reminded me of hor brilliant Carolyn was and how slept on she was. Carolyn not only wrote that beautiful song, but she also wrote one of Aretha's biggest and most legedary iconic hits: "Ain't No Way" and one of Aretha's best earlier works "Baby, Baby, Baby" and so many other major songs for Aretha. She was a BRILLIANT songwriter. So this thread is in dedication and memorial to Carolyn Franklin, the Little Genius who lied in the shadow of the Queen Genius and the TIMELESS songs she penned for her sister.

I HAVE A COMPLETE SET OF CAROLYNS OWN MUSIC ABOUT 100 SONGS AND SHE HAD WAYY BETTER MUSIC THAN ARETHA...IM THE BIGGEST PATTI LABELLE FAN ANYWAY SO MY ARETHA MATERIAL IS LIMITED ALTHOUGH I DO LIKE SOME SONGS...BUT CAROLYN IS MAGNIFICENT BUT SHE DID NOT HAVE THE VOICE ARETHA HAD.

ALTHOUGH SHE AND IRMA, ARETHAS OTHER SISTER, DID SOUND VERY MUCH ALIKE. LIKE THEY ALL SOUNDED ALIKE TO SOME DEGREE.

yea. she has 2 brothers: Rev. Cecil and Vaughn. She also has 4 kids which alot of people don't know. She had the 1st 2 kids when she was 13 and 15.

My dad is a huge fan of aretha but he used to always say that carolyn was a much better singer. I never heard any of her stuff though.

DEAD @ Carolyn was a better singer. I don't know about all that. But she was definitely a better songwriter.

Anybody who could write songs like Ain't No Way, Baby Baby Baby, and Angel is a CHIEF who should be respected.

Aretha was blessed with a god given talent that's not even of this world. Even though the voice is not what it once was, she can interpret a song like no other. Her material on Columbia sits other vocalist down, and she is not even known for this only her true fans. Check out her interpretation of If Ever I Would Leave You-Pure Genius. If these sisters were a group, they would shut down all other sister groups that we know and love so much today. Their harmonies were second to none. Sadly Irma and Carolyn are no longer with us, but their respective music lives on. They both have some nice songs in their catalogues, but they would both suffer from the shadow of the Queen Aretha.
